The Wegovy Pill in Ireland: Everything You Need to Know About the Oral Semaglutide Tablet

The Wegovy Pill in Ireland: Everything You Need to Know About the Oral Semaglutide Tablet

For years, the most effective medical weight-management treatments came in one form only: an injection. For anyone who disliked needles, that was a genuine barrier. That has now changed. A once-daily Wegovy pill, an oral form of semaglutide, has been approved, and through our Northern Ireland dispensing route it is becoming accessible to patients in Ireland following a doctor-led medical assessment.

This guide explains what the Wegovy pill is, how it works, what the clinical trials found, who may be suitable, and how the process works at WeightLossInjections.ie. The information here is provided for general educational purposes only and does not replace medical advice. Prescription-only medicines used in weight management are considered only where clinically appropriate, following assessment by an Irish-registered doctor.

What is the Wegovy pill?

The Wegovy pill is a once-daily tablet containing semaglutide, the same active ingredient used in the well-known Wegovy injection. Semaglutide belongs to a class of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These work by mimicking a natural gut hormone (glucagon-like peptide-1) that helps regulate appetite. In practice, that tends to mean you feel fuller sooner, stay satisfied for longer, and find it easier to eat less.

Until recently, semaglutide for weight management was only available as a weekly injection. The oral version delivers the same medicine in tablet form, taken once a day. One important point of clarification: an oral semaglutide tablet already exists under the brand name Rybelsus, but Rybelsus is licensed for type 2 diabetes at lower doses (up to 14 mg). The Wegovy pill is a higher-strength formulation (up to 25 mg) developed specifically for weight management.

Is the Wegovy pill approved?

Yes. On 11 June 2026, the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) approved oral semaglutide 25 mg, the Wegovy pill, for weight management, making the UK the first country in Europe to license it. This followed earlier approval in the United States. In the European Union, the medicine has been submitted to the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and remains under review at the time of writing.

Because the tablet is now licensed and stocked through pharmacies in the UK, including Northern Ireland, patients in the Republic of Ireland can access it through our established Northern Ireland dispensing route, the same model we already use for injectable treatments, where an Irish-registered doctor determines it is clinically appropriate.

How does the Wegovy pill work?

Semaglutide works on several fronts at once. It acts on appetite centres in the brain to reduce hunger, slows the rate at which the stomach empties so you feel full for longer, and helps steady blood sugar. The combined effect is that most people naturally eat less.

The pill is designed to be taken on an empty stomach first thing in the morning, with no more than a small sip of plain water (around 120 ml). You then wait at least 30 minutes before eating, drinking anything else, or taking other medicines. This matters: semaglutide in tablet form relies on a special carrier compound (SNAC) for absorption, and food or other liquids in the stomach can reduce its effectiveness. The tablet is swallowed whole and never crushed, split or chewed.

What do the clinical trials show?

The Wegovy pill was studied in the OASIS phase III trial program. In the OASIS 4 trial, 307 adults with obesity or overweight with a weight-related condition were followed over 64 weeks. Participants taking the 25 mg oral dose alongside lifestyle support lost an average of 16.6% of their body weight when they adhered to treatment, compared with roughly 2% on placebo. When measured across the entire study population (including those who stopped early), the average reduction was about 13.6%.

To put 16.6% in context, it is broadly comparable to the high-dose Wegovy 2.4 mg injection, which has shown average weight loss of around 15%. The injectable forms, and in particular the dual-action treatment tirzepatide, can show slightly higher figures, but the pill was developed to bring injection-level results into a needle-free, daily-tablet format. Individual results vary, and the medicine works best alongside changes to diet, activity and lifestyle.

How is the pill dosed?

Like the injection, the Wegovy pill uses a gradual dose-escalation approach to help the body adjust and minimise side effects. It is made in four strengths, 1.5 mg, 4 mg, 9 mg and 25 mg, with a minimum of around one month at each step before increasing. Most people reach the 25 mg maintenance dose after several months. People already established on the 2.4 mg semaglutide injection may, under clinical guidance, switch across to the 25 mg tablet.

What are the side effects?

Because it is the same medicine, the side-effect profile mirrors that of injectable semaglutide. The most common effects are gastrointestinal: nausea, diarrhoea, constipation, vomiting and bloating. These tend to be most noticeable when starting treatment or stepping up a dose, and usually settle as the body adjusts, which is exactly why the dose is increased gradually.

Less common but more serious effects can include pancreatitis, gallbladder problems, and, as noted in the product’s warnings, thyroid concerns. Semaglutide is not suitable for everyone; for example, it is not used in pregnancy. This is why the medicine must be prescribed and supervised by a qualified doctor who has reviewed your medical history. We cover side effects and how to manage them in a dedicated guide.

Who can take the Wegovy pill?

Eligibility broadly follows the criteria used for the Wegovy injection. As a guide, these medicines are typically considered for adults with a BMI of 30 or above, or a BMI of 27 or above alongside a weight-related health condition such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure or raised cholesterol. BMI is a starting point, not the whole picture; a doctor will also consider your wider health and history.

Please note we do not prescribe these treatments to people with diabetes. Not all patients are suitable, and a prescription is not guaranteed.

How to access the Wegovy pill through WeightLossInjections.ie

Our model is simple, doctor-led, and the same one our patients already use for injectable treatments:

  1. Complete a short online medical questionnaire (around 3 minutes) and select your preferred treatment. Our first consultation is €50 (repeat consultations €30).
  2. An Irish-registered doctor reviews your information to assess whether treatment is clinically appropriate.
  3. If a prescription is issued, it is sent to your chosen pharmacy in Northern Ireland, which arranges dispensing separately.
  4. Collect in person or arrange delivery through the dispensing pharmacy.

If, following your consultation, the doctor determines treatment is not suitable, a prescription will not be issued, and your consultation fee is refunded. We provide access only to medical consultations and prescriptions; medicines are dispensed separately by licensed pharmacies.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Wegovy pill available in Ireland?

The tablet is approved and stocked in the UK, including Northern Ireland. Patients in the Republic of Ireland can access it through our Northern Ireland dispensing route where an Irish-registered doctor determines it is clinically appropriate. It is not yet EU-licensed and is not available on the HSE.

Is the Wegovy pill the same as the injection?

It contains the same active ingredient, semaglutide, and trials suggest broadly comparable results. The difference is the format, a daily tablet rather than a weekly injection, and how it is taken.

Is the Wegovy pill the same as Rybelsus?

Both are oral semaglutide, but Rybelsus is a lower-dose tablet licensed for type 2 diabetes. The Wegovy pill is a higher-dose formulation developed for weight management.

How do you take the Wegovy pill?

Once daily on an empty stomach with a small sip of water, at least 30 minutes before food, other drinks or medicines, swallowed whole.

How much does it cost?

You pay €30 for the prescription sent to a pharmacy in Northern Ireland. The medicine itself is charged separately by the dispensing pharmacy.
